The Talaq procedure in Pakistan, governed by the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961, is a formal process through which a Muslim husband can initiate divorce. To begin, the husband pronounces Talaq (divorce), either verbally or in writing. After this, he must submit a written notice of Talaq to the local Union Council or Arbitration Council, as required by law. Upon receiving the notice, the Union Council sends a copy to the wife and begins the process of reconciliation, allowing 90 days for attempts to resolve the conflict. If the reconciliation efforts fail and the 90-day period passes without a resolution, the divorce becomes effective. Failure to notify the Union Council makes the Talaq invalid under Pakistani law.
